Lenovo Smart Display, the new smart display from Google

Back in January, Google announced that it was working with a third party hardware company on a smart display speaker that is supported by a touch screen, then in May during Google’s I/O conference, the company showed the new Smart Display that was made by Lenovo. And here we are now, the new Lenovo Smart Display is now available in the market, so let’s have a look.

The Lenovo Smart Display comes in two different sizes, an 8-inches HD display and a 10-inches full HD screen, besides the screen size and the speaker, the two versions are completely identical.

With a 5 megapixel camera, we can say that it’s a Google Home with a screen and a camera, so basically what was missing from Google Home devices, but Google is trying a new thing by introducing this new Google Assistant device, the new Lenovo Smart Display works on Android Things which is a new IoT (Internet of Things) platform from Google with a new interface.

One disadvantage about the new platform is that it doesn’t have an app store yet so the user will have to stick to the apps offered by default like Youtube, Google Photos, Google Duo, and Spotify. To solve this problem, you will be able to cast anything from any app on your phone that supports ChromeCast.

As it’s supported by Google Assistant, so you can use your Google Assistant to do anything, play music, set timers and alarms and control your smart home appliances, but this time with a screen. For your privacy, you can always slide a slider on the side that will shut down the camera and the mics.

With the new Lenovo Smart Display Google finally has an alternative for the Amazon Echo Show, with two options for size, the Lenovo Display is bigger in size while cheaper in price from the $230 Echo Show. the 8-inches version will be for $199, while the 10-inches display will cost $249. But if we consider the limited amount of apps on the Lenovo Display, it’s probably better if we wait a bit more to see how Android Things will evolve.
